I-93 South in Charlestown Reopens But Traffic Still Slow

The highway was closed at the Storrow Drive exit, southbound.

Interstate 93 in Charlestown reopened before 9 a.m. Thursday morning, but traffic was still slow after a tractor trailer rolled over in the southbound lane at about 5:30 a.m.

The roadway was closed at the Storrow Drive exit and a detour was set up while crews cleaned the area, according to State Police.

NECN reported that traffic is especially slow in the Sullivan Square area where motorists exited the highway hoping to avoid a detour that was set up further down the road.

Traffic was backed through Somerville up as far as Stoneham.

The truck was hauling a full load of clay which spilled on the roadway, as well as diesel fuel and hydraulic fluids.

The driver of the tractor trailer was transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries, police reported.
