Sound Off: Should Somerville Have a Snow Emergency, Closed Schools?

Schools were open Friday in Somerville, and there was no snow emergency in the city, even as the area was expecting a total of 8 to 12 inches of snow by the end of a storm that, arguably, caught the region by surprise.

By 7 a.m. Friday morning, about 7.4 inches of snow had fallen at Boston's Logan Airport, and by around 11:30 a.m., 8.5 inches had fallen in nearby Melrose, according to the National Weather Service.

Anecdotally, I measured about 7 inches of snow on top of my car Friday morning.

Meanwhile, WHDH was reporting the Somerville area would probably end up with 8 to 12 inches, when all is said and done.

The TV station reported the snow would end in Somerville at around 3 p.m. Friday, with sun in the forecast for the weekend.

The MBTA was maintaining full service Friday morning, with no planned shutdowns, according to the transit authority's Twitter account.

In neighborhing Boston, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino urged people to use public transportation and stay off the roads.

On it's Facebook page, the city of Somerville issued the following statement about snow removal:

Crews spent the night salting and sanding all City roads in advance of the snow, and plowing will continue throughout the day, so road conditions should continue to improve. The snow is forecast to slow by midday as temperatures rise. Please remember to clear your sidewalks, and, if you can, offer assistance with snow clearing to neighbors, family or friends, and especially seniors, who may need help. Please remember that property owners who do not clear sidewalks within 6 daylight hours of the end of snowfall are subject to ticketing. Please also report any non-emergency issues to 311. Thank you for your patience during this storm.
