Somerville Bar Featured In 'The Social Network' Reopens

The Thirsty Scholar's status was complicated following its closure last summer.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A decades-old Irish pub that shut down last summer has since reopened.

The Thirsty Scholar left the door open for a possible comeback at the time, with a sign out front that read, "sorry, temporarily closed until further notice." Boston Restaurant Talk reported that it would return under new ownership, and the bar's website now says it is open starting at 4 p.m. every day.

The Thirsty Scholar served as the backdrop of the opening scene in the 2010 movie "The Social Network," about Mark Zuckerberg and the founding of Facebook. The Beacon Street haunt opened in the mid-1990s and draws an eclectic crowd that includes Harvard students, Irish immigrants and residents of Somerville and Cambridge.
