Somerville Deli Closes After 60+ Years
A sign outside of Thurston Spa gives a myriad of reasons for the shop's closure, including the owner's illness and rising cost of food.
SOMERVILLE, MA — A sandwich shop that's been a mainstay in the Winter Hill neighborhood for more than 60 years has shut down.
Boston Restaurant Talk reported that Thurston Spa has a sign out front reading, "Closed due to owner's illness, high cost of food, lack of business due to COVID. Thank you to our loyal customers. Stay healthy and safe." The shop is also listed as "permanently closed" on Google.
Thurston Spa was run by John Ferreer, a longtime friend of previous owner and sole employee Jerry LaFee, who died in 2015, Eater reported.
