Somerville Falls in First Round of 'High School Quiz Show'

Somerville fell to Lincoln-Sudbury in the first round of the trivia show.

Somerville High School's trivia team fell to Lincoln-Sudbury Sunday in the first round of WGBH's "High School Quiz Show."

It was the second year in a row Somerville made it onto the show. In 2012, Somerville also lost in the first round.

Somerville was within striking distance of Lincoln-Sudbury going into the final "lightning round" of the show, but Lincoln-Sudbury surged ahead in the final round, thanks in large part to the rapid-fire play of Justin, who answered several questions in a row.

In the end, Somerville walked away with 290 points, and Lincoln-Sudbury earned 500. The winning team will face off against Brookline on April 14.

Even with Sunday's loss, the Somerville team may have a bright future. Only one of the players, Zoe Iacovino, is scheduled to graduate at the end of the year.

Miles Bain and Celine Lessard-Brandt will be seniors next year, and the forth member of the team, John Iacovino (Zoe's brother), will be a junior next year.

What's more, the team's two alternates will also be available next year. R.J. Bingham will be a senior and Graham Lessard-Brandt will be a junior.

The 16 best public-school trivia teams in the state compete on the show.

To say, "There's always next year," in this case, is a realistic goal.
