Somerville Fire Hydrant Testing Begins. Find Out How Long It Will Last

Officials said testing may cause temporary rusty water in homes or businesses. There is no health hazard, but the water could stain clothes.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The City of Somerville has announced that its annual fire hydrant testing began Monday and is scheduled to last through Saturday, Sept. 2.

Testing is scheduled to take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and, if necessary, in the evenings between 6:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. according to city officials.

The testing consists of flushing the water from a hydrant in order to check the hydrant's mechanical operations.

The testing, according to officials, may disturb the sentiment in the water mains, which may cause temporary rusty water in homes or businesses.

"Although water may appear discolored, it does not pose a health hazard, and this rusty water condition should clear in a few hours," city official said.
