Somerville Grocery Store Closing Next Month

SOMERVILLE, MA — Bfresh Market, a grocery store located in Somerville's Davis Square, has announced that it is closing its doors next month.

The store, located at 244 Elm St., made the announcement on its website, stating that it will close officially at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12.

A spokesperson for Stop & Shop, a sibling company to Bfresh, explained the decision to close the Somerville store to Cambridge Day.

"Stop & Shop has made the difficult decision not to renew the lease for our Bfresh store," Caroline Medeiros, external and corporate communications manager for Stop & Shop, told the publication. "The store was not meeting financial expectations."

No announcement has been made on what will be replacing Bfresh at the Somerville location, according to MassLive.com.

Stop & Shop also said all employees at Bfresh in Somerville will have an opportunity to transfer to other local Stop & Shop stores.

Bfresh, which specializes in natural and organic products, opened its 11,000-square-foot store in Somerville in 2017, according to Cambridge Day. Ahold, also the corporate parent of Stop & Shop, created Bfresh as a chain of smaller, urban grocery stores, the publication reported.

However, a Bfresh location in Allston closed in 2017 and the Brighton store closed in 2019.

In a statement, Stop & Shop urged Bfresh customers to shop at the company's other Somerville stores at 779 McGrath Highway and 105 Alewife Brook Parkway or to shop online for home delivery.
