Somerville Mail Carrier Stole Prescription Packages: Cops

The former mail carrier was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A Somerville mail carrier stole prescription medication from postal customers on his route, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Michael Vernon, 52, was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday on a charge of theft of mail by an officer or employee, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a media release.

Vernon worked as a mail carrier in Waltham, according to the release.

"From around June 2022 through January 2024, Vernon allegedly used his official position to rifle through the contents of mail entrusted to him, including packages containing prescription medication," the release said. "It is alleged that Vernon stole bottles of prescription drugs intended for postal customers on his delivery route in Waltham."

Vernon faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
