The fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom shortly before 6:30 p.m., and when firefighters arrived there was "heavy fire" coming from the apartment, according to Deputy Chief Patrick Sullivan of the Somerville Fire Department.

The fire was confined to the second-floor apartment, but the family in the first-floor apartment under it was also displaced, according to the Red Cross.
