This Weekend in Somerville: Memorial Day Parade, Chainsaw Maidens from Hell, and Boston's Calling

Events in and around Somerville this weekend.

Boston Calling
Okay, it's not in Somerville, but it's cool. This two-day festival will feature 18 bands, including Fun, The National, Of Monsters of Men and The Shins. There will be two beer gardens and a number of food trucks and restaurants. It takes place Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Memorial Day Parade
Somerville's Memorial Day Parade takes place Sunday. It will include 17 marching bands, Shriners, representatives from the New England Beauty Pageant and more. It starts at 1 p.m. at Somerville High School and proceeds down Highland Avenue into Davis Square, then up Holland Street, through Teele Square, and down Broadway to the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Chainsaw Maidens From Hell Kickoff Party
From the listing: "SVG Films is holding a kickoff party for Chainsaw Maidens From Hell, a horror comedy that will shoot in Somerville using local artisans from the Artisan's Asylum." Chainsaw Maidens From Hell is from the producer of Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, which was a Tribecca Film Festival selection and one of the "30 Best Films of 2010" by the New York Times, according to an email about the project. The kickoff party takes place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Artisan's Asylum.

Memorial Day Weekend Family Fun at the USS Constitution Museum
If you and the kids want to get out of the house this Memorial Day weekend, head over to the USS Constitution Museum in Charlestown, where kids can enjoy a number of activities. They'll learn to march and use seagoing tools, they'll make an officers hat (best worn athwartships) and learn about life at sea. They can also purchase, for $2, a "build a ship" activity to take home or build at the museum. There are activities all weekend. The museum opens at 9 a.m. at 1 Constitution Plz in Charlestown.

Boston Philharmonic Funk Foundation
This 44-piece philharmonic plays "heavily orchestrated disco hits and soul ballads" live. They play Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at The Center for Arts at the Armory.
