Thursday: Hearing on Union Square Housing Project

It's a project that has, in previous months, divided opinions in Union Square.

The Somerville Planning Board was scheduled to hold a public hearing Thursday evening on a proposed mixed-income housing development in Union Square.

The project, a partnership between the Somerville Community Corporation and Cathartes Private Investments, would build a total of 84 new apartment units at the sites of the former Boys & Girls Club and the Cota Struzziero McKenna Funeral Home.

Of those apartments, 40 would be affordable units built at 181 Washington St. and managed by Somerville Community Corporation. The other 44 units would be part of a market-rate project built by Cathartes at 197 Washington St.—39 would be market rate and 5 would be affordable due to Somerville's affordable-housing laws, which require housing developments to make 12.5 percent of their units affordable.

The project is going before the planning board as one conjoined proposal.

Thursday night's hearing takes place at 6 p.m. at the Visiting Nurse Association, 259 Lowell St.
