Representatives from Dunkin' Donuts and the Dart Container Corporation, at a public hearing held Wednesday, opposed a proposed polystyrene takeout-food container ban in Somerville, while several aldermen and residents supported the ban.

A few envelops, an old newspaper, some parish pamphlets, a handful of prayer cards, a few medallions … and a flood of memories. That's what was found in a time capsule that had been sealed in the corner of Somerville's Saint Polycarp School in 1951 and was opened Monday, almost 62 years later, by a group of former students.

Benjamin Echevarria, who was appointed to the Somerville School Committee in January, stepped down from the position due to illness, before officially taking office. In his place, the Somerville School Committee Monday night appointed Steven Roix as the Ward 1 representative on the committee.

Red Line Expecting Dramatic Service Interruptions
The MBTA Board of Directors voted Wednesday to renovate the Longfellow Bridge, and that means the Red Line is expecting 25 weekends worth of bus diversions over the course of three years, according to the Boston Globe.

The United States Post Office is close to inking a deal to sell its Union Square building, according to Michael Glavin, director of Somerville's Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development. However, the Post Office hasn't said who the potential buyer is. 

Somerville Sees Slower Home Sales in January
Coming off a year in which Somerville saw a 35 percent increase in home sales compared to the previous year, home sales in January slowed down a bit, according to figures released this week.
