Somerville police said the suspect smashed a wine bottle when employees confronted him for trying to steal it.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A would-be shoplifter tried to slash a store employee with a piece of a broken wine bottle after he was confronted, police said.

The incident happened on Main Street around 6:45 p.m. Monday night. Police said the suspect smashed a wine bottle when employees confronted him for trying to steal it.

He left the store but returned soon after, picking up a piece of glass and charging an employee, police said.
