Since the collapse of its once- glorious empire in 1911, China has seen decades of epic turmoil and upheavals, emerging in the new century as both an authoritarian megastate and an econom- ic powerhouse. How did this happen? How can we account for China's momen- tous-and almost wholly unanticipated-global rise? And what does it mean, for us in the West and for humanity's future? This DVD series is narrated by China expert and Professor Richard Baum of UCLA. This fall we are planning 12 sessions each showing 2 1/2 hr. videos accompanied by discussion and/or commentary.
