Reported Three-Week Drinking Binge Lands Sudbury Businessman in Jail

A man on a drinking binge was arrested March 29 after reportedly nearly hitting a number of parked cars.

A man who allegedly couldn't stand he was so intoxicated on March 29 was on a three-week drinking binge, according to a statement his wife made to police.

At 6:30 p.m. Marlborough police observed a Nissan Altima being driven nearly in the gutter of the road in Marlborough. The driver was later identified as Edward H. Gibson Jr., 29, of 628 Devonwood Way in Clinton.

Gibson is listed as president of Gibson Associates, Inc., in Sudbury.

"She stated that Edward has been on a three week alcohol binge and has been working to control his alcohol issues, however the last three weeks had been out of the ordinary," wrote Officer Brian Langelier in his police report of the incident that occured Friday night.

When the officer pulled out, the operator of the car directly behind the Altima flagged the officer down and told him that the Altima had nearly hit a number of parked cars on West Main Street. Police turned on their lights behind the car on Boston Post Road, but Gibson did not stop the car even after police had pulled up next to his vehicle twice.

"He acted like he didn't see me and he continued in an attempt to pull onto the southbound on ramp for 495 South," wrote Langelier in his report.

Gibson only stopped the vehicle after police put their cruiser in front of his, and then it took him several minute to open the door and his speech was slurred, according to court records.

"During the encounter with Edward he was making no sense, couldn't talk, didn't know where he came from or was going, didn't know what time it was, could barely stand on his own, was swaying and was unable to make conversation with any of us," said Langelier in his report.

Gibson told police he had several glasses of wine in the afternoon and an unopened bottle of wine was found in the back of the car, according to court documents. He denied a breathalizer test at the scene and after being transported to the station, according to police.

Gibson was arrested on Lakeside Avenue on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation and failing to stop for police. He was released on personal recognizance bail.
