Sudbury Firefighters Rescue Ducklings From School Drain

Even the smallest rescues can be pretty big. Sudbury firefighters responded to the situation Wednesday at a local elementary school.

SUDBURY, MA — Thirteen ducklings are safe following an emergency response Wednesday morning by Sudbury firefighters.

The firefighters responded to a call about the ducklings stuck down a storm drain at Israel Loring Elementary School after their mother duck sounded the alarm.

"School officials had been notified by the mother duck of the location of her babies," the department said in a tweet.

After scooping the ducklings out of the drain, the firefighters delivered them in a box to a local wildlife officer.

Each spring, ducklings hatch in locations farther away from water, and then mother ducks lead their babies to wetlands, ponds and other water sources. Some of the processions might encounter obstacles like roads and enticing storm drains. If you encounter stuck ducklings, the state keeps a list of approved rescue and shelter services across Massachusetts.
