Tale Of Deadly Drug Cocktail To Be Performed At Lincoln-Sudbury

The play "Back To Life" reenacts a person's experience with a fentanyl overdose during a night of partying.

Narcan is the leading anti-overdose drug, but it has no effect on people who ingest xylazine, a drug increasingly used to cut fentanyl.

SUDBURY, MA — A performance depicting a person's overdose experience with a deadly drug cocktail is coming to Lincoln-Sudbury High School Tuesday, offering a cautionary tale to parents and students.

The play "Back To Life" will be performed by the troupe Drug Story Theater, a group of high school-aged actors who are in active recovery. Psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Shrand organized Drug Story Theater as a way to help teenagers in recovery spread awareness about the dangers of drugs.

"Back To Life" covers the rise of fentanyl mixed with xylazine, a sedative whose effects can't be reversed by anti-opioid drugs like Narcan. The deadly combination has been appearing more often in street drug samples taken in Massachusetts in recent years, according to health officials.

"'Back to Life' depicts a real-life account where a night of partying goes horribly wrong, based on a true story from one of the actors. This performance is geared toward parents, students 8th grade and up, and community members to shine a light on the prevalence of deadly substances found in recreational drugs available to children. The actors are all high school students in active recovery and will be doing a talk-back after the show to answer questions and share their stories," Drug Story Theater described of the performance.

"Back to Life" by Drug Story Theater will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Auditorium, 390 Lincoln Road, Sudbury. Find out more about the performance from the Sudbury Health Department.
