Wayland, Sudbury Host Workshop For Sherman's Bridge Project

SUDBURY, MA — The towns of Sudbury and Wayland will hold a visioning workshop on Thursday to discuss a proposed reconstruction.

Sherman's Bridge, which was previously reconstructed in 1992, acts as a key link between Sudbury and Wayland. The towns are now proposing a rehabilitation project because, although it's safe for travel, MassDOT cited the need for "significant structural repairs to keep it open," according to a news release from the towns.

The proposed project will:

  • Replace the wooden deck with a stronger glulam timber deck and asphalt overlay.
  • Install crash-tested bridge railings and approach guardrails.
  • Complete targeted substructure repairs to extend the bridge's life and improve safety.
  • Reduce maintenance costs, improve travel safety and protect the Sudbury River.

MassDOT said that without these upgrades, the bridge will face closure, the towns said.

The meeting will take place at Fairbank Community Center, 40 Fairbank Rd, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
