Meet Swampscott's Biggest Political Donors

Five people combined to make 34% of all Swampscott contributions to federal candidates and committees in the current election cycle.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — As of June 30, residents of Swampscott had contributed $101,668.80 to federal candidates and political action committees in the current election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission data. While there were more than 1,900 donation, just five residents from the 01907 zip code had combined to contribute 34 percent of that total. The list is topped by Ralph James, who has made $12,875 in political contributions this election cycle.

Swampscott's top political contributors include:

  1. Ralph James, $12,875: In addition to a $5,000 contribution to the Democratic Party of Virginia, the former executive director of executive education at Harvard University contributed $3,050 to Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), $2,800 to the presidential campaign of Kristen Gillibrand and $2,000 to North Carolina Congressional candidate Dan McCready.
  2. Daniel Meyers, $7,800: Meyers, who built First Marblehead into a student-lending powerhouse, has made two contributions: $5,000 to the Consumer Bankers Association PAC and $2,800 to the reelection campaign of President Donald J. Trump.
  3. Frances Barnard, $7,180: In addition to contributions to the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Beto O'Rourke, Barnard has made dozens of smaller contributions to Actblue, a nonprofit technology organization that enables Democrats, progressive groups, and nonprofits to raise money on the Internet by providing them with online fundraising software.
  4. Alix Smullin, $7071.56: The former Swampscott School Committee member also made contributions through Actblue, as well as contributions to McCready, Kentucky Senate candidate Amy McGrath, Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL). He also donated to the VoteVets and the Swing Left PACs.
  5. Nelson J. Darling Jr., $6,130: In addition to $1,550 to Elizabeth Warren's presidential campaign, Darling has made contributions to Moulton and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, as well as contributions through Actblue.
