SWAMPSCOTT, MA — North Shore residents taking the commuter rail in and out of Boston during two March weekends will need to switch to shuttle buses for their trip between Swampscott and North Station.

The MBTA said that shuttle buses will be in use this weekend (March 9-10) and the weekend of March 30-31 on the Rockport/Newburyport line. The disruption does not affect those looking to enjoy a little St. Patrick's Day revelry in Boston on March 16 or March 17.

The South Boston St. Patrick's Day parade is on the holiday itself this year at 1 p.m.

The disruption is because of signal improvement work, the MBTA said.

Normal train service will run from Rockport and Newburyport to Salem.

During this time, the shuttles will be free and accessible from Swampscott to Boston. But those taking bicycles are advised that while they are allowed on commuter rail trains, they will not be allowed on buses from Swampscott to Boston.

Weekend commuter rail service remains $10 unlimited as part of an ongoing program that officials are seeking to make permanent.
