What's the Latest with Mission on the Bay?

Mission on the Bay is definitely still coming to Swampscott, but construction has taken longer than expected.

Principal owner Marty Bloom said Boston is in the midst of a “building boom” and Mission on the Bay, along with many other projects in the area, has been slowed by too buildings and not enough people to build them.

“You need bodies to get things done,” Bloom said, noting that construction crews are stretched thin throughout the region. “We’re moving along.”

Bloom estimated that the building at 141 Humphrey St. is about 60 to 65 percent complete, but a summer 2015 opening just isn’t going to happen. He said an opening date in mid- to late fall is now looking more likely.

In addition to finishing construction, Bloom is still on the hunt for the perfect chef to run the multi-faceted restaurant, which will feature a rooftop deck, two levels of dining, a couple of large bars, and a walk-up takeout or snack bar for beach strolling passersby.

“I haven’t found mister or miss right yet,” Bloom said, adding that he wants to hire a chef with excellent cooking skills as well as the superlative managerial skills that will be necessary to run the restaurant smoothly. “I know exactly what I’m looking for.”

Bloom also said that running the restaurant will require a lot of employees, which he hopes to begin hiring soon. Already, he said, there are a few individuals from the old Red Rock Bistro who have said they want to be on the team when Mission on the Bay opens.

Once the restaurant opens, Bloom said he expects it to be a busy spot 12 months out of the year.
