Election Day? Not Much Proof Of That

Voter and campaign participation is almost nonexistent in the first several hours of the State Primary.

What if you threw an election and nobody came?

According to Election Wardens at , voter turnout has been extremely slow as of 12 p.m. As of the Municipal Election in April, there were 20,709 registered voters in Tewksbury. At the present pace, 15 percent participation would seem overly optimistic.

But what is more amazing is that there are scarce few campaigners holding signs and waving to voters outside the polling places. There were just two campaigners, both holding signs for incumbent state Rep. Jim Miceli, outside the There were also a small pile of signs for State Senate candidate Rep. Paul Adams, laid neatly on the ground.

Meanwhile, over at the there were no campaigners at all and one pile of Miceli signs stacked on the grass.

Voter apathy in this primary election can be traced in large part to the lack of contested races. Aside from Governor's Council (which generates very little interest) the only contested race in Tewksbury is for the GOP nomination for State Senate, which features Adams and Andover Selectman Alex Vispoli. The winner will take on incumbent state Sen. Barry Finegold, D-Andover, in November. Finegold's district includes Tewksbury, Andover, Dracut and a portion of Lawrence.
