North Reading resident Paul Barker opened Pauli's Restaurant, a popular sandwich place in the North End. Shortly after he opened, Joe Gannascoli – best known for his role as Vito Spatafore in The Sopranos – was filming a promotional video on Salem Street. He wandered into the restaurant and said: “This is cool.”

Paul told him he had just opened and Joe asked if could make him something to eat. Paul agreed, and one of their most famous sandwiches was made that day.

“The next thing I knew, he was behind the counter, making a sandwich,” Paul said. “And that’s how The Vito was born. We sold three while Joe was in the restaurant.”

School Nurses Continue Fighting For Equal Pay

An ongoing dispute between the Wilmington School Committee and the district’s registered nurses remains, with no immediate end yet in sight.

The nurses believe they should be paid on the same level as teachers in the school instead of at a lower pay scale. About 70 percent of districts pay their nurses the same as teachers while 30 percent do not.

“Right now that is our goal, to educate the public to what is happening and what we’re fighting for,” said Woburn Street School nurse Lori Trites. “The money is one thing. But we’re fighting for our professionalism at this point. We work in the town, work in the schools, and we value these children just as much as the School Committee hopefully does.”

Should Hannaford Be Able To Sell Alcohol?

On Monday night, the Board of Selectmen heard arguments over the possibility of Hannaford selling beer and wine at its store on Drum Hill.

Representatives of Hannaford told the Board that it had never had any problems enforcing local liquor laws elsewhere throughout New England, and that the Chelmsford store was somewhat of an anomaly for not selling alcohol, with only 13 of the 181 Hannaford stores selling some kind of liquor.
