Public Health Museum In Tewksbury Adds Thursday Outdoor Tours

TEWKSBURY, MA — The Public Health Museum in Tewksbury is welcoming back visitors by announcing the addition of Thursday Outdoor Tours in August.

“We are so pleased to add this new tour day and time to our schedule as we welcome back more visitors,” said Sandra Price, the museum’s Coordinator of Volunteer Engagement.

Through architecture, photographs and stories, the tour explores the history of Tewksbury Hospital, one of the first public health hospitals in the country. Started as an almshouse in 1854, the hospital was home for a short time to Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher, among other fascinating residents. Guests will learn how the original 900-acre campus evolved and served its residents while navigating a host of public health issues.

Tours last approximately one hour and are weather permitting. Good shoes are recommended for the one-mile walk.

The Public Health Museum is a non-profit educational and cultural institution dedicated to public health history. The museum also serves as a resource to the community, exploring public health initiatives that address current health issues with online content and programming for high school students interested in public health careers. The museum partners with libraries and senior centers to bring its programs to the community.
