VIRTUAL: Cycladic Art -- Enigmatic & Elegant Sculptures From The Ancient Aegean (*RR)
Thursday, July 24, 10:30am
Dating back as long ago as 5,000 years, artists on the Cycladic islands worked marble stone with obsidian chisels to create some of the earliest human figures in art history. The Early Bronze Age sculptures are mostly female in form and at first, they appear quite similar to one another. But as you study them, you begin to discern differences between the artistic styles and shapes. These simplified and sleek ancient forms inspired a number of famous artists of the 20th century including Constantin Brancusi and Amedeo Modigliani. And without any ancient written sources to explain these figures, they continue to capture our imagination, leaving us with many questions and only a few certain answers. Led by art historian Mary Woodward, a guide at several Historic New England properties. She previously served as Public Programs Coordinator and Educator at the Concord Museum.
