Demo Day In Waltham: Young Building Is Demolished

It happened. It really happened.

WALTHAM, MA — On Saturday, several residents gathered, some with small children, to point and watch as the building on the corner of Moody and Maple streets was torn down.

"It really makes it look so simple," one woman remarked as a construction machine's claw tore into the Young Building to make way for what will become an expanded, renovated fire station in the South Side of town.

"A lot of people have said this is a really long time coming," said City Councilor Cathyann Harris. "This is really one great step forward in public works and public safety projects for the South Side."

The city approved funding $239,000 for the demolition of the Young Building near the corner of Moody and Maple to make way for a new Moody Street fire station late last year.

The Moody Street Fire Station was built in the 1800s, when firefighters drive to the fires via horse-drawn carts. City Councilors say that firefighters tell them on hot humid days you can still smell the horses. For years, the city has talked about how to best upgrade the historic station that they say is severely outdated.

"I'm happy," said Councilor Robert Logan as he watched the building get demolished.
