The week before Thanksgiving the mailbox popped up on the Waltham Common at the tree lighting.

WALTHAM, MA – Kids in Waltham don't know how good they have it – the Watch City has a direct line to St. Nick himself.

Santa's Mailbox, provided by the Waltham Women's Club, is set up on the Waltham Common for children to mail their letters to the big cheery guy up North.

The mailbox began accepting submissions at the annual Christmas tree lighting last Friday and will continue to send them to the North Pole until Dec. 15.

Please be sure to leave a return address on each child's letter, so that Santa knows which chimneys he's sliding down the night before Christmas (we've heard he's pretty busy that day).

The Waltham Women's club got the idea for the Santa Mailbox and started it in 2010. The Lion's Club helped by building the mailbox, according to an elf close to the project.

How many children send letters through this special mailbox? Santa's helpers say they go through about 400 letters each year.
