The Waltham Animal Control officer said she's gotten a number of calls about dogs on the Cambridge Reservoir. They're coyotes, she said.

WALTHAM, MA — The Waltham Animal Control officer wants you to know those dogs out on the ice at the Winter Street reservoir are not dogs. They're coyotes, and they're doing what coyotes do.

"We have been getting a lot of calls about dogs on the ice at the reservoir on Winter Street," Deanna Gualtieri posted to Facebook, Tuesday. "They are coyotes. They live out there and take advantage of the ice to get between the islands more easily."

The pair of healthy-looking coyotes are feeding on a deer carcass that's out on one of the islands. This cold weather has allowed them the perfect opportunity, she said, to have an ample feast that will stay preserved enough to allow them to eat at their leisure.

They will be staying in the area and making several trips out there a day until it has been picked clean.

So, no need to keep calling her. But it is a good chance to catch a glimpse of coyotes from afar.
