Trial Delayed for Waltham Woman Accused in Hit-And-Run

The trial of a Waltham woman accused of killing a man in a car crash in 2011 has been postponed, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.

The trial of Blanca Contreras, a 29-year-old native of Guatemala, had been scheduled to begin on March 6, but that date has been pushed back to June 13, according to DA spokesman Diane McDonald. She did not have information on the reason for the postponement.

Contreras, who is in the United States illegally, is facing motor vehicle homicide charges in the November 2011 death of Scott Coxall, 39, of Waltham. Authorities believe Contreras was driving the car that struck and killed Coxall when he was crossing the intersection of School and Church streets at around 6 p.m. The car fled the scene but Contreras was later arrested at her home.

Contreras’s attorney later claimed her boyfriend, William Vasquez, was driving the car, but the DA’s office says Contreras was the driver. Vasquez has pleaded not guilty to charges that he lied to authorities when he told them he was driving the car.

In April of 2012, a Waltham District Court judge ordered Contreras held in jail without bail pending the outcome of her case. However, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have said once Contreras’s criminal charges are adjudicated, ICE will start the process to deport her back to her home country.
