Waltham, State Police Searching For Armed Suspect

Police say a man named Darren Dyette is wanted for an assault that reportedly happened early this morning on Fourth Avenue.

WALTHAM, MA — Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a man wanted for an assault that happened early this morning on Fourth Avenue and who is considered armed and dangerous. The search for the man, prompted a shelter in place at Waltham schools, according to school officials. That shelter in place was lifted just before noon after police gave the all clear.

Police say Darren Dyette is wanted for the assault reported at a hotel in the area and was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

UPDATE: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday: Police say the man turned himself in.

A number of residents awoke this morning to the sound of helicopters, as State police helped Waltham Police search for the man beginning around 6 a.m., according to police.

For about three hours Monday was a heavy State police presence near Bear Hill Road, including K-9 and uniform patrol. There was also a helicopter hovering in the area to aid with the search of an armed suspect for several hours beginning at 6:30 a.m.

"We had uniform troopers, K-9 and our helicopter was out there. The investigation is still ongoing but they should wrap up soon," said a State Police spokesperson around 9 a.m.

The high school was sheltering in place until noon.

"The Waltham Police have determined the situation has been cleared and there is no immediate threat. All schools will resume their normal activities and normal dismissal," according to the alert.

During a shelter in place, staff and students move about the buildings as they normally do, but they are not permitted to go outside, and anyone asking to come into the buildings are more heavily screened.

Residents near Bear Hill said they received robocalls from police around 7:30 a.m. alerting them to a police presence nearby. Around 9:30 a.m. residents who were home got another call saying the massive search was over but to be on the lookout for a man with dreadlocks wearing a black sweatshirt.

Waltham Police did not return request for comment.
