4 Things You Missed at the April 22 Selectmen Meeting

The April 22 Board of Selectmen meeting featured a few tidbits apart from the big news.

1. Moment of Silence. Joe Nolan led the board and meeting attendees in a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing.

"We all had friends and neighbors that were impacted," Nolan said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who were injured in that terrible, terrible event. Watching the citizens and everyone who stepped up and really saved a lot of lives. It showed the best nature of our character as citizens and humans."

2. New Leadership. As this was the first public meeting since the conclusion of the 2013 Annual Town Meeting, selectmen elected a new chairman and vice chairman. Doug Leard will serve as chairman and Tony Boschetto as vice chairman for the next year. They were unanimously elected.

3. Wayland Cares' Future. Selectmen discussed the future of this program and how and whether to investigate its future in teh town following a Town Meeting vote that declined town funding.

Selectmen said they were interested in forming a non-biased committee -- comprised of both Wayland Cares supporters as well as those who vocally opposed the funding. Town Administrator Fred Turkington will draft a possible charge and potential components of the committee to study the future of the organization.

4. OPEB Funding. Selectmen considered the question of funding prior year OPEB contributions with fee-supported activities. They decided that they want to look beyond that question to the larger issue of OPEB funding.

They decided to look at establishing a committee or working group that looks at guidelines regarding how to fund Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB) appropriations. Boschetto will draft a charge and makeup for the committee and selectmen will consider it at a later meeting.
