'Bird Walk' To Be Held At Heard Farm

Come out and see the local nighthawks.

Want to get out and see some of Wayland's most interesting wildlife? The town will be hosting a bird walk for those curious and interested in observing animals in their natural habitat on August 27 and September 10.

Whether you're a lifelong birdwatcher or a parent trying to engage your children in nature, this evening activity should be educational and a meaningful way to engage with the community and the environment. According to a release on the town's website, observers saw 77 nighthawks last year on August 27, in addition to 48 other species of birds — including bald eagles.

It also notes that the common nighthawk population has declined precipitously since 1966, falling by 59 percent by 2010. It's not easy to measure their population size, but it would seem they are not faring well, which is all the more reason to learn about them in a passive way.

The bird walk will begin around 5 p.m on Saturday evening at Heard Farm Conservation Land and will meet in the parking lot, about a half mile from the bird walk trail itself. It will be led by Brian Harris, the town's land manager.
