Wayland Police Chief Ed Burman Retires

He officially became chief in December 2023.

WAYLAND, MA — Wayland Police Chief Ed Burman has retired, according to Town Manager Michael McCall.

McCall confirmed Burman's retirement on Friday, and Lt. Mark Hebert was sworn in as acting chief on Monday.

Burman became the acting chief in April 2022, following the resignation of former Chief Sean Gibbons, who was accused of sexual assault. Burman officially became chief in December 2023.

Burman worked at the Framingham Police Department from 1996 to 2013 and at the Ashland Police Department from 2013 to 2022, before joining the Wayland Police Department as a Lieutenant in 2022.

"Chief Burman served our community with dedication, professionalism and a steadfast commitment to public safety," wrote McCall in a statement to Patch. "During his tenure, Chief Burman led initiatives to strengthen community trust and modernize department operations which included numerous technology upgrades. The Chief's efforts have included improving community relations by attending numerous community events along with Wayland Police Officers, and joining community groups at their meetings."
