Virtual Author Talk: The Imprisoned Guest with Elisabeth Gitter
Gitter retrieves the now-forgotten life of Laura Bridgman, the most famous deaf-blind person in the world before Helen Keller, exploring Bridgman’s relationships with Perkins School Director Samuel Gridley Howe, and her teacher, Sarah Wight of Wayland (see below). Prof. Gitter is the author of numerous studies of 19th-century literature and culture in England and America. The Imprisoned Guest won the Massachusetts Book Award for Non-Fiction. Register. Virtual Author Talk: Dropkick Murphy—A Legendary Life with Emily Sweeney
After putting himself through medical school during the Great Depression as a professional wrestler, John Murphy opened a training gym that was also an alcohol addiction

Virtual Author Talk: The Wishing Pool with Tananarive Due
Due’s second collection of stories is full of her signature offerings of horror, science fiction, and suspense while confronting monsters of all kinds, including racism, the monster within, and the supernatural. Her prolific body of work cements the author as a leading voice in black speculative fiction for more than 20 years. Register. Wednesday, June 28 at 8 p.m.
Sarah Wight Exhibit
Sarah Wight (1822-1878) was the daughter of Rev. John Burt Wight, Wayland state legislator and one of the founders of the Wayland Library. At twenty-three years old, she became the teacher of Laura Bridgman, the most famous deaf-blind person in America before Helen Keller. Wight is the subject of a fascinating exhibit in the vitrine on the main floor.

Raytheon Room Exhibit: Photos by Shutterglide
John Zhuang is a software engineer by profession, but photography is his passion and hobby. As a one-man studio called Shutterglide.com, he has photographed landscapes and wildlife for more than 20 years, winning multiple awards. He says, “With years of hiking, backpacking, and mountain climbing, my ideal photograph tells story that speaks directly to the heart and moves people to self-reflection.” His work will be on display through June.
YOUTH SERVICES
SUMMER READING
Our 2023 Summer Reading Program Find Your Voice has started. Programming highlights include Circus Minimus, live animals with Joy from Joys of Nature, and a performance by the Toe Jam Puppet Band, as well as many fun craft and STEM challenges. Kids can track their reading online or on paper logs to earn raffle tickets for prizes. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library!
The Teen Summer Reading Program has also started. Programming highlights for teens include a Henna workshop, making pride stickers, a beading workshop, and a Switch Tournament. Teens can also track their reading to earn raffle tickets for prizes.

Outdoor Baby & Toddler Storytime with Ms. Carly
This storytime encourages early literacy and caregiver-child interactions with lively songs and rhymes, bounces, books, and body-awareness. Best for babies and toddlers, with caregiver.
Weather permitting, we will meet outdoors on the green lawn. Tuesdays, June 20 and June 27 at 10:30 a.m.
Outdoor Storytime with Ms. Pam
Join Ms. Pam for stories, songs, puppets, and activities. For ages 2.5 to 5 years with an adult. Please register. We will meet in the Children’s Room. Thursdays, June 22, and June 29 at 10:30 a.m.
FOR ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN
Make Your Own Story Cubes
Come create a storytelling game! Kids will draw a set of story cubes featuring their own unique designs and ideas. Then we will show you how to use your cubes to play a storytelling game by yourself or with friends. For ages 4 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 20, at 3:30 p.m.
Circus Minimus: One-Man Circus-in-a-Suitcase
This show gives everyone an opportunity to participate in an enthralling, whimsical celebration of the imagination. At Hannah Williams Playground, 71 Main Street, Wayland. Please register HERE. Wednesday, June 21, at 4:00 p.m.
Build It! Cardboard Robots
If you could build a robot helper for this summer, what would it do? Bring your imaginations to build models of your summer robot using cardboard and recyclables. For ages 4 and up, with caregiver. Please register HERE. Tuesday, June 27, at 3:30 p.m.
Buildwave: Hands-on Building Game
In this hands-on building game, kids will create with over a dozen different building materials. The program is run by educators at Buildwave. For children ages 5 and up, with caregivers. Registration required. Please register HERE. Wednesday, June 28, at 3:00 p.m.
Origami for Kids
Children will learn simple and intermediate origami in this workshop led by Fenn school student Lucas Li. For children ages 6 and up. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 29, at 4:30 p.m.
FOR TEENS
Henna Workshop for Teens
Henna, more traditionally referred to as Mehendi art, is a temporary tattoo art form consisting of intricate motifs that adorn hands and feet. This workshop will take an unconventional approach to the ancient art form. Teens will begin by getting familiar with the henna cone, and then draw patterns, such as flowers, leaves, and vines, on a canvas. Teens are also, of course, welcome to draw on their own hands. All materials will be provided. Local teen Niyathi Srinivasan from Henna for Humanity will lead this workshop. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE. Monday, June 26, 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Create a Fantasy Map
Teens will learn how to easily create a fantasy map using dried rice and pasta. We’ll have some of the best YA fantasy book maps on hand for inspiration as well as creative prompts to help build a unique world. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE.
