Wayland Community Pool Fundraising To Make Critical Upgrades

The pool upgrades have tentative Community Preservation Act funding, but boosters still need to raise over $500,000.

WAYLAND, MA — Wayland Community Pool boosters have mounted a $1.3 million fundraising campaign to make critical upgrades at a facility that draws swimmers from across the region.

The pool, located next to Wayland High School, is home to many local swim teams, and serves as a training center for advanced athletes. Swimmers from Boston to Framingham use the pool to train and compete.

The pool was last rebuilt in 2010, but is now in need of upgrades like a chair life for disabled swimmers, new diving boards, lockers and scaffolding repairs. The pool also has about $650,000 in debt to pay off from the last rebuild, and needs new plumbing and repairs for the removable bubble that covers the pool in winter.

The pool has tentative Community Preservation Act funding of about $326,000, subject to a spring Town Meeting vote. Private donors have already given $500,000, leaving about $500,000 more to raise, according to organizers.

"With a deep-rooted sense of community and equity, WCP has become a place where those who have never had a swim lesson to those who are seasoned athletes come together to learn, grow and experience the benefits of a community run pool," the fundraising appeal says.
