Cyanobacteria Closes Lake Chauncy In Westborough: Health Officials

An algae bloom in the lake could be potentially poisonous to people and pets.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Town health officials are asking residents to stay out of the water at Lake Chauncy due to a potentially harmful algae bloom.

The town closed the lake Thursday after the presence of blue-green algae was detected. The algae could potentially contain cyanotoxins, which can cause a range of symptoms from skin irritation to paralysis and death in rare cases.

The bloom is of special concern for animals and pets that might accidentally drink the water.

"There is no antidote for cyanobacteria poisoning, and the prognosis is poor to grave for some animals, even with aggressive treatment. If you suspect your animal has been exposed to cyanobacteria, you should seek immediate veterinarian care," Westborough Health Director Jennifer Sullivan said in a bulletin Thursday.

The Lake Chauncy swimming area has been open this summer, but has been without a lifeguard. Visitors will find closure signs at the beach and around the lake.
