The Lost Ski Area of Westborough: the Ski Tow and Roundtop

Several people remember an area that operated about a mile away from the old Westboro Speedway.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Though there seem to be some conflicting memories, several Westborough residents - both current and former - recall a ski slope that operated somewhere behind Westborough High School from as early as the '50s into the late '70s.

According to information submitted to the New England Lost Ski Areas Project by several who remember skiing at the area, or had relatives who did, it was located on Ruggles Street, just beyond Westborough High's baseball diamond. The poles that held the ski tow, say some, are still visible.

"The area was known as 'the ski tow' by most people," wrote a reader on the New England Lost Ski Areas Project, "and the hill was called 'Roundtop' by Westborough townies. I remember people skiing there until some time in the late '70s. It seemed to be open at the whim of the recreation department. I never skied there but used the hill many times for sledding. There was skiing on weekends and nights, when the hill was lighted. There was a single rope tow on the left side of the hill."
