Risk Level For West Nile Virus Rises In Westborough

WESTBOROUGH, MA — The risk level for a life-threatening virus has changed for Westborough.

The threat of West Nile Virus has been elevated to moderate in several towns, including Westborough. The reason for the increased risk is that additional mosquito samples have tested positive for WNV, according to the town.

A moderate risk level means that the virus is mostly prevalent in mosquitoes, but has the potential to circulate in human populations.

The town recommends taking precautions to reduce bug bites, like using mosquito repellent and wearing long sleeves and long pants, as well as dumping any standing water twice a week.

Most people infected with the West Nile Virus will have no symptoms, but some could experience fever or flu-like illness. In the most severe cases, the virus can be deadly.

There were 19 human cases reported in Massachusetts last year.

The state confirmed the first animal case of the West Nile Virus for this year last month. That was after a goat was exposed to the virus in Lunenburg.
