Westborough Discount Rain Barrels Offer Savings, Environmental Fix

With a stormwater fee set to begin in Westborough, rain barrels offer bill savings, and more.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough is now selling rain barrels at the discounted price of $89 — but town officials are pointing out that's just the beginning of what you'll save.

Adding a rain barrel to your property helps collect water that can be used to irrigate plants and lawns during drier times, saving money on water bills. That savings may come in extra handy with a new stormwater utility fee set to begin on July 1.

The barrels, which hold up to 60 gallons, also help keep rainwater out of the town's sewers. Rain that washes into the stormwater system can contribute to flooding and erosion. Floodwaters also often include chemicals and other contaminates from the streets.

"This past summer, many communities reported several inches of rain within just a few hours. On Aug. 8, more than 6 inches of rain fell on parts of Massachusetts. Drivers were stranded in their cars. There were hundreds of no swimming days at our beaches this summer. Heavy rains sent bacteria-laden stormwater into the ocean. By Oct. 2, there had been only five rain-free weekends since Memorial Day. Presently, climate crisis is here to stay," the town says.

Westborough residents have until May 24 to buy one or more discounted rain barrels.
