Westborough Pay-As-You-Throw Trash System: Discounts Available For Seniors
The new pay-as-you-throw system starts Monday. Here's how some residents can get discounted bags.
WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough's new pay-as-you-throw trash system starts Monday, and the town is also kicking off a program to help senior residents pay for the special bags.
Starting July 1, all residents who dispose of trash at the transfer station will have to use special bags sold at local grocery stores. The transfer station will no longer accept trash in any old trash bag.
Bags went on sale earlier this month at three local grocery stores. For most residents, the bags cost $10 for a roll of ten 15-gallon bags or five 33-gallon bags. But the town will also sell rolls of the 15-gallon bags to people over age 65 for $1 who meet income qualifications.

On top of buying PAYT bags, Westborough residents will also have to purchase annual transfer station stickers. Residents also need recycling stickers to drop off that type of refuse, but no PAYT bags are needed for recycling.
The PAYT system does not apply to residents who pay for curbside trash pickup, and residents who live in apartment complexes with Dumpster service.
