Westborough Figure Skater's Bat Mitzvah Surprise Goes Viral

Shayna Smith's parents surprised her at her bat mitzvah party last Saturday with a video featuring clips from the Westborough resident's figure skating career.

As of 1:33 p.m. Thursday, that video had been seen 2,941 times on YouTube.

The video is a parody of "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, featuring Wanz, according to Smith's father, Mike.

Mike Smith said he and his wife Sue, and some Westborough parents, wrote and filmed the video secretly over five months at NorthStar Ice Sports in Westborough. Parents from Hopkinton, Framingham, Southborough and Upton are in it, too.

"We actually had some of the same costumes as the original Macklemore video," he said.

The U.S. Figure Skating Facebook page includes a link to the video.

"This needs to go viral. Mazel Tov Shayna!" someone posted there.
