Westborough Pay-As-You-Throw Bags Go On Sale

Town residents won't have to start using them until July, but you can stock up on PAYT bags now.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough residents now have another item to add to grocery lists: pay-as-you-throw bags.

The special bags will be on sale beginning June 17 as the town prepares to switch to a pay-as-you-throw system on July 1. Under the system, residents will have to bag trash in the special PAYT bags before dropping them at the transfer station.

The bags will be on sale at three locations: Roche Bros. along Union Street, Westborough Ace Hardware along Phillips Street and the new Market Basket along Route 20 in Shrewsbury. The bags cost $10 for a roll of ten 15-gallon bags, or $10 for five 33-gallon bags.

On top of buying PAYT bags, Westborough residents will also have to purchase annual transfer station stickers. Residents also need recycling stickers to drop off that type of refuse, but no PAYT bags are needed for recycling.

The PAYT system does not apply to residents who pay for curbside trash pickup, and residents who live in apartment complexes with Dumpster service.
