First Parish Church United Looks For Discussion on How The Bible Should Be Interpreted
The congregation, located just off the Town Common, will be hosting a series starting this weekend that aims to foster discussion over literal and non-literal interpretations of the bible, specifically in the context of modern issues.

For thousands of years, one thing that has garnered constant debate is interpretations of the Old and New Testaments of the bible. On March 10, that debate will be coming to the First Parish Church United right here in Westford.
The event, entitled “The Bible: A Guidepost or a Weapon” will break up into three segments that will examine interpretations of the bible, including a focus on modern day issues such as how it views the rights of women and the LGBT community.

While Event Organizer Randy Steere stresses that First Parish is not a doctrinal church, he expects a healthy discussion between those who take a literalist view of the bible and those who see the scriptures as a living document that has gained new context in helping the spiritual needs of the modern world.
“The first goal is to challenge ourselves, to be honest with ourselves about why we believe in things. We need to be honest about what we know and believe,” says Steere. “The community benefits from a deepening of the discussion, and I think that will be fruitful to all people.”
