Train Brakes Start Fire, Closing West Prescott Street For Half an Hour

The following are excerpts from the Westford Fire Department from April 15 to 22, 2013 Additional information was provided by officers of the Westford Fire Department.

 

April 15, 7:43 p.m. - Portions of a hotel were evacuated after a fire alarm went off. Upon further investigation, the source of the alarm stemmed from a guest who overcooked popcorn in a microwave.

April 17, 1:47 p.m. - A brush fire on Crocker Drive impacted a 1,500 square foot area. Officials believe that improper disposal of ashes from a wood stove caused the blaze.

April 18, 8:54 a.m. - The odor of smoke at St. Catherine's had been caused by a faulty light fixture. Electricians were able to fix the problem.

April 18, 1:36 p.m. - Westford firefighters aided in dealing with a condo fire in Tyngsboro, specifically to help with venting the second floor of the contol and overhauling the building once the fire was controlled.

April 19, 2:46 p.m. - Approximately half an acre of brush burnt on West Prescott Street, with Fire Department officials believing that a train passing through the area had faulty breaks, leading to sparks that caught onto the brush nearby.

Assistance from Littleton was required and West Prescott Street was closed for approximately 30 to 45 minutes as firefighters accessed a hydrant to fight the fire.

It is unclear what happened to the train after it left Westford.
