Westford Fires Firehouse Architects

Plans for the firehouse were reportedly too expensive or not up to par with the city's needs.

WESTFORD, MA - The Westford Permanent Town Building Committee voted to terminate their contract with the architectural firm working on the new Center Fire Station project, Wicked Local reported.

Newburyport-based architectural firm Dore & Whittier had drawn up a design that was at least $4 million over the $12.74 million budget appointed by voters at a 2015 Town Meeting, Wicked Local reported.

Suggestions offered by the firm for lowering costs included cutting out the police department and fire department’s proposed combined dispatch center (a project Dore & Whittier has also been removed from) and other "critical components of the program," according to Wicked Local.

“Overall, we felt that our committee has essentially lost confidence in their ability to deliver a successful project,” Permanent Town Building Committee Chairman Tom Mahanna told Wicked Local. “It was unfortunate that we had to come to that decision.”

A Request for Qualifications will soon be issued to find a new architectural firm to complete the project, Wicked Local reported.
