5 Things: Get Tickets for Taste of West Roxbury; Mayor's Coffee Hours
All of the YMCA of Greater Boston's 13 branches are giving free individual adult Y memberships to emergency service personnel – including police, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians - during the month of May.

- On Thursday morning, join Mayor Thomas Menino for free coffee, refreshments, and to receive a flowering plant. 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Hynes Playground.
- On Thursday night is the 2nd annual Taste of West Roxbury with 24 restaurants serving up their most delicious offerings! Starting at 6 p.m. at the Irish Social Club of Boston. Tickets can be purchased at www.wrms.org or at the door. Tickets $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Please note the Irish Social Club bar will be cash only.

- On Friday is a Frozen Friday DJ Public Skate at Jim Roche Community Ice Arena. 8 p.m. $5 admission/$5 for rental skates. Live DJ and snack bar.
- The Associates of the Boston Public Library is running its 10th annual Children's Writer-in-Residence competition. The program was created to provide an emerging children's writer with the financial support and quiet space needed to complete one literary work within a nine-month period. The fellowship provides each author with a "room of his/her own" in the Central Library in Copley Square, and a $20,000 stipend. The residency will run from October 2013 through June 2014.
