West Roxbury, Roslindale Schools Raise Thousands for One Fund Boston

Students from multiple Parkway schools donated money to not wear uniforms for the day with all funds going to One Fund Boston.

 

Several West Roxbury and Roslindale schools have held no uniform days this week to raise money to go to the One Fund Boston, to help those most affected by the Boston Marathon bombings.

The Ohrenberger-Beethoven K-8 School raised more than $4,000 between the K-8 feeder schools.

Along with the Ohrenberger and Beethoven schools in West Roxbury, the Sumner, Bates, and Philbrick schools in Roslindale, as well as the Mather School in Dorchester, banded together for a Wednesday of kids not wearing uniforms to support a good cause.

"We have a tradition of conducting fundraisers in times of need," said Naomi Krakow, principal of the Beethoven and Ohrenberger schools.

"We had a number of families who had members who ran the race, or were down there, or were first responders, or police officers," said Amy Sprott, principal of the Philbrick School, which raised about $960 (and ccounting) by the end of Thursday. "We knew a lot of our students were very connected to this (tragedy). Students were very excited to come in, and they were energized and happy. People really reached into their wallets to show support for the city that we love. And we’re very proud to be Bostonians."

Sprott said one first-grader handwrote a note similar to what , wrote about wanting peace - photo that has gone viral.

At the Sumner School in Roslindale, the total was $800 and counting as of Thursday.

"It was nice. It's a good feeling to know the kids wanted to be helping and many brought (donations) to me and said 'This for the people who got hurt,'" said Deana Rutherford, administrative assistant.

"People wanted to show support for our children and the city," said Sprott.
