West Roxbury Weekend: Pomfret Block Party; Surprise Party for MJ's Owner; and Farmers' Market

Looking for something to do this weekend in West Roxbury and Roslindale? Here are three options for you.

• On Saturday there will be a surprise party for Steve O'Malley thrown by the Roslindale Board of Trade. O'Malley, the owner of MJ's on Belgrade Avenue, surprised the community by retiring recently. Steve will be surprised with a Hawaiian Luau Celebration at the Knights Of Columbus,  4192 Washington St., Roslindale. 6-10 p.m. Coordinated by Michael Tobin, Lisa Modecker, Judie Leon, John Sullivan, Steve's family, friends, Boston Police District Area E-5, colleagues and members of the Roslindale and West Roxbury community. O'Malley worked for 37 years in theWest Roxbury and Roslindale community, so join for a memorable fun-filled evening with food, live entertainment and lots of laughs. Bring cheers, toasts, poems, pictures and good tidings, but please let it all be part of the surprise (and yes, this is a posting on a public website, so go figure). Dress casual, Hawaiian shirts and flip flops are proper attire. $15 donation. Proceeds go to the RBT Charity Fund. • On Saturday one of West Roxbury's most beloved community members, Charlie Nichols, will have a memorial bench dedicated in his honor, followed by a block party. Charlie Nichols was the owner and operated the Pioneer Food Store on Weld Street in West Roxbury for 50 years. Charlie's Store at 604 Weld St., is named after Nichols, near the corner of Pomfret and Maple streets. That is will there event will be taking place at noon, and is open to all. The memorial bench dedication will be held on Sat., Aug. 10 at noon followed by a block party on Pomfret Street. • On Sunday the Corey Street Farmer’s Market is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Temple Hillel B’nai Torah's parking lot at 120 Corey St. It is open to everyone. The Corey Street Market is a collaboration between Temple HBT, Theodore Parker Unitarian Universalist Church, West Roxbury Main Streets and Silverbrook Farm in Dartmouth, MA. Fresh produce, local vendors and more.
