Fourth of July Committee Working to Bring Fun on the Fourth Back This Year
Committee to work with community groups, town officials in the hopes of presenting a celebration on July 1-2 with fireworks Saturday night.

WILMINGTON, MA - Wilmington’s Fourth of July Committee is moving forward to work with town officials and community groups to bring the Fun on the Fourth back for a 36th year.
The committee also announced they believe it’s time to reevaluate the approval process for the event and that it should in the future be placed in the hands of residents through Town Meeting.
Members of the Fourth of July Committee met Sunday morning to discuss options for 2016 and beyond following the denial of their application to include a carnival as part of the annual Fun on the Fourth Celebration.

The committee issued a press release late Sunday.
“For the past three years, we have been challenged to present a Celebration that differed in many respects from past Celebrations,” the statement says. “These challenges have greatly impacted the financial resources that we have available as our events are under written by donations and contributions from the carnival”

Committee members say in the weeks to come they will be working with the participating community groups and town officials in the hopes of presenting a celebration on Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2 with fireworks on Saturday evening.
“As we have in the past, we will rely on the generosity of donors and sponsors to present this Celebration to the community,” Committee members said.
The statement goes on to say:
“Prior to this decision, our discussions included the possibility of appealing the denial to the court system. As much as we disagree with the denial and believe that the basis of that denial is unsupportable, none of us joined the Committee to dedicate our time to litigation. As a committee, therefore,we have concluded that our focus is better dedicated to remaining where it has been for more than three decades–to presenting a fun, family, community event for the residents of Wilmington. At the same time, in light of the events of the past three years, we believe that it is time for the approval process to be reevaluated and for that reevaluation to be placed in the hands of residents at Town Meeting.
With the application process behind us, we look forward to focusing our efforts on continuing this Wilmington tradition for a 36th year.
