WILMINGTON, MA — A GoFundMe campaign was started last week to pay for a memorial to a fallen Woburn police officer who resided in Wilmington.

The GoFundMe page was established by Joseph Cigna with the goal of raising $5,000 to install a memorial plaque in Wilmington honoring John "Jack" Maguire, who was killed in the line of duty in 2010. As of Tuesday, $795 had been raised.

According to Boston.com Maguire, 60, was a married father of three and a 34-year veteran of the force who was nearing retirement when he was killed.

Cigna said he hopes to put the Maguire plaque on a stone by the Hathaway Acres walking trail. Maguire lived in nearby Hathaway Acres.

"(Maguire), who enjoyed these woods and trails often, made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of his duty to protect and serve on December 26, 2010," Cigna wrote. "I hope that when we, as community neighbors, come to enjoy our time there, we will remember Jack always."

According to reports, Maguire was killed on Dec. 26, 2010, when responding to an armed robbery of the jewelry counter of a Kohl's department store.

On a snowy night, Maguire chased one of the robbers — 57-year-old Dominic Cinelli — through a parking lot. A shootout ensued and both Maguire and Cinelli died of gunshot wounds.

"They responded to the robbery, and Jack engaged over the hood of his cruiser. He shot Cinelli and they both died," former Woburn Police Chief Robert Ferullo told WCVB.

Cinelli, Boston.com reported, had been released on parole the previous year. He had been serving three concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for shooting a security guard two decades earlier during an armed robbery spree.

Ferullo told WCVB why the veteran Maguire had been working the holiday shift that night.

"He was working the day after Christmas in a blizzard so younger officers could be home with their families," Ferullo said.

Maguire was the first Woburn police officer killed in the line of duty, according to Boston.com. More than 2,000 police officers from cities and towns, college campuses and state agencies from across the region took part in a memorial ceremony for Maguire shortly after his death.

In 2012, the Woburn Post Office was renamed after Maguire. Then-Senator John Kerry attended the dedication ceremony. The Maguire family also received a copy of the legislation signed by President Barack Obama
